Trakoscan Castle

The most impressive castle in Croatia is Trakoscan Castle, 83km northewest of Zagreb. Although the exact date of its construction is unknown, it retains classic 12th century and 13th century features and was occupied by the aristocractic Draskovic family from the end of the 16th century.

Unlike Veliki Tobor Castle, the interior is furnished with original pieces from the Draskovics, who occupied the castle until the early 20th century. When the castle was restored in 1860, the surrounding grounds were landscaped and turned into an attractive park with exotic trees and an artificial lake.

If you wondered what the Draskovics looked like, there are plenty of portraits throughout the castle as well as an armaments of collection, cavalry flats, a kitchen and library. Note the unusual exterior heating system that allows the servants to stock the fires without entering the family rooms. There are no buses operating between Zagreb and Trakoscan, but there are buses from Varazdin.
