Dvorec Bezanec is a beautiful restored 18th century castle surrounded by a landscape park, 12km east of Veliki Tabor Castle. The rooms are immaculately decorated and there is an excellent selection of contemporary art on display throughout. It’s worthwhile eating lunch or dinner at the hotel; three-course menus starts at 110KN and the wine list is excellent. Horse riding, tennis, bike riding and hot-air ballooning can be arranged. You’ll never want to leave.
For something to eat, try Gresna Gorica, a rustic eatery that is a favourite with families. Kids will love running around the garden and grown-ups will love the selection of superbly prepared Croatian specialities. The restaurant can be found on the side road about 1km east of Veliki Tabor and has a refreshing countryside view. There are nine daily buses from Zagreb to Desinic but you will have to walk 3km northwest to Veliki Tabor.
